Winds of Change in Brisbane

In term 4 2024 we held our inaugural Winds of Change Lite program in Brisbane. The students from Wynnum State High School got down to business with a crew briefing on dock before taking The Tribe out on to the bay for a showdown with Ignition.

Ignition rounded the mark first but were no match for the participants on The Tribe who raced to victory. Today was a very proud moment for our volunteers as we commended the group on how far they have come in such a short space of time and we were honoured to have played a role in their personal development journey.

Brisbane will host its first full Winds of Change program in term 1 2025, joining Sydney and Newcastle as the third Making Waves port to offer the program.

The Winds of Change program supports young people who would benefit from targeted opportunities to
develop the confidence, optimism, knowledge and social skills to unlock their potential.

Delivered 1 day per week over 8 weeks within a safe and inclusive group environment, 8 to 10 carefully chosen participants are brought together into a team who eventually learn to sail a racing yacht with little or no assistance. The participants actively engage in the learning process, moving from observation to guided practice, then independence. Each week they make decisions about their individual journeys of growth, with support as needed from teachers and the Making Waves crew.
