Success at Festival of Sails

The Festival of Sails 2025 was a resounding success at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, where our Making Waves Foundation programs proudly operate. From January 25-27, 2025, we were thrilled to connect with program participants, engage with the wider Geelong community, and meet sailors from across Australia and Melbourne who came to support our mission.

One of the highlights was our participation in the 183rd Passage Race, where our dedicated volunteers led by our On Water Operations Manager Wendy Tuck showcased their passion and commitment aboard our modified program yacht WotEva TP52. This event similarly underscored the importance of teamwork and perseverance – values we cherish at Making Waves Foundation.

We were inspired by attending the SheSails Women on Water Breakfast, which reminded us of the importance of inclusivity in sailing. Seven of our volunteers and staff attended this event (including our youngest volunteer, 19 year old Isabella McClay), reinforcing our commitment to creating opportunities for everyone to experience the joy and challenge of sailing, regardless of ability or background.

The festival wasn’t just about competitive sailing. We enjoyed the spectacular aerial display by the Air Force Roulettes and the uplifting tunes of the Air Force band. These performances along with many more highlighted the diverse ways people can come together and celebrate, much like how we bring people of all abilities together through sailing.

We also had the privilege of showcasing ‘Sticky Beak’, our first Wright of Passage boat built by youth experiencing disadvantage at the Western Beach Boat Club. This project embodies our mission to empower young people through hands-on experiences. Learn more about our Wright of Passage Program here: The Wright of Passage Program. We are always looking for more volunteers and donors.

As we reflect on this fantastic event, we’re excited about the future and eager to welcome more volunteers to our team. The Festival of Sails 2025 has reinforced our commitment to making sailing accessible to all and creating waves of inclusion in Geelong. If you have sailing experience, experience with youth of all abilities or are passionate about making a difference please register your interest to volunteer with the Making Waves Foundation here: Volunteers – Making Waves

We’re grateful for the opportunity to spread the word about our foundation and our mission to expand and involve more local volunteers in our Geelong port.

Thank you to everyone who supported us during the Festival of Sails 2025!
