Over three days at the Australian Wooden Boat Festival, our team constructed a Rainbow Dinghy, showcasing our Wright of Passage program. This hands-on program empowers young people (ages 15-18) by helping them develop trade skills, teamwork experience, and work-ready attitudes, paving their way toward further education, training, or employment.
We are exploring opportunities to set up the Wright of Passage program in Hobart. We need to secure a location, volunteers and funding or partners and sponsors. If you have any connections or would like to donate to the program please click here: Wright of Passage – Making Waves

Following the Wooden Boat Festival, Making Waves launched a Hobart Winds of Joy Campaign. Our Sydney program boat ‘Kayle’ remained in Hobart after the completion of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, offering Winds of Joy programs to local schools to start the year. Over two weeks we were able to take out 132 participants from 7 different schools!
The Southern Support School in Hobart is one of our main clients every time we are in town. Students have diverse needs; most are non-verbal and communicate through tablets and flash cards and most have very limited mobility.
Skipper Kathy Veel says “On the boat we have great joy in seeing them grow in confidence, as fearful faces turn into wide grins, and resistance becomes cheeky playfulness. They provide a great challenge for us volunteer to find ways to connect with and engage the students at their own level.”
We’re making sailing accessible for those living with disabilities or facing disadvantage—all for free. Help us establish a permanent program in Hobart: Support Us – Making Waves
