All-Women’s Winds of Joy Sails

Making Waves Foundation proudly hosted two special Winds of Joy sailing programs in Newcastle, designed to empower and inspire young women. Female students and teachers from Hunter Sports High School and Morisset High School joined Skipper Janease Graham and the rest of our all-female crew on board Joy for a memorable experience that celebrated inclusivity, teamwork, and the strength of women.

The two sails were highlighted by media coverage from 9News Newcastle, which captured moments shared by participants and crew.

The students had the opportunity to take the helm, trim sails, and work as a team to navigate the waters. These activities not only introduced them to the technical aspects of sailing but also fostered confidence, problem-solving skills, and a sense of achievement. Teachers remarked on the transformation they witnessed in their students, as many overcame initial nerves to embrace the challenges with enthusiasm.

With 42% female participants, 35% female volunteers, and 50% women in our office leadership, we’re proud to be driving inclusivity in sailing. Our 31-year journey has seen 26,460 young women experience sailing, breaking barriers and building confidence.

From our dedicated board members to our Sydney to Hobart crew, women are at the helm of our success. As we continue to expand, we’re committed to empowering more girls and women through our unique sailing programs.
